My Heart Arrived Before I did.
I thought the hardest part would be figuring out what I wanted.
For years, I felt disconnected from myself.
Not dramatically.
Just quietly.
I was doing what needed to be done. Showing up. Taking care of responsibilities. Building a life that looked perfectly reasonable from the outside.
Somewhere along the way, I stopped asking myself what I wanted.
Not because I didn’t care.
Because I got really good at listening to everything else.
Over the last several months, that has started to change.
I’ve been paying closer attention.
Writing.
Creating.
Asking different questions.
Listening more carefully to the quieter parts of myself.
And something unexpected happened.
I started recognizing myself again.
I honestly thought that would be the happy ending.
I thought clarity would feel like peace.
Instead…
it felt like something else.
⸻
No one told me that once you begin hearing your own voice again, it’s hard to ignore it.
You notice the work that no longer fits.
The dreams that refuse to leave you alone.
The places that feel like home, even if you don’t live there yet.
The creative work that keeps calling your name.
The life you want begins to feel incredibly real.
And your current life…
is still your current life.
That’s a strange place to stand.
⸻
There’s something almost painful about finally knowing what you want…
and realizing you can’t snap your fingers and be there tomorrow.
For me, that awareness didn’t create instant happiness.
It created longing.
A deep longing.
Not because my life is bad.
Because now I can clearly see the life that feels more like me.
⸻
Then another feeling showed up that caught me completely off guard.
Grief.
Not because I made terrible choices.
Not because my past was wasted.
But because I found myself wondering…
What if I had realized this sooner?
How many years did I spend becoming who I thought I needed to be?
Those thoughts can pull you into regret if you’re not careful.
I’m learning not to stay there too long.
But pretending they don’t exist wouldn’t be honest either.
⸻
There’s one more part no one prepared me for.
Once you know what feels true…
waiting becomes harder.
Not because you’re impatient.
Because your heart has already arrived somewhere your circumstances haven’t.
Maybe that’s why “just be patient” hasn’t felt very comforting.
Patience is important.
But it doesn’t fully describe what’s happening.
This isn’t simply waiting.
It’s living in the space between recognition and reality.
Between knowing…
and becoming.
⸻
I’m beginning to think this season deserves more compassion than we give it.
We celebrate the breakthrough.
We celebrate the destination.
We rarely talk about the stretch in between.
The part where your inner life has changed faster than your outer life.
Where you wake up every day knowing more clearly who you are…
while your calendar, your job, your address, or your circumstances still look much the same.
That doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong.
It means life takes time to catch up.
⸻
Maybe this season isn’t asking us to be more patient.
Maybe it’s asking us to stay faithful to what we’ve already recognized.
To keep taking the next honest step.
To keep creating.
To keep paying attention.
To keep trusting that the life growing inside us today will eventually become the life we’re living.
Not all at once.
Little by little.
Just like everything else that has ever mattered.
